The city of Portsmouth has a population of around 189,000 people and is located in the county of Hampshire on the southern coast of England. Portsmouth has been a significant naval port for centuries and is home to the world's oldest dry dock still in use. Portsmouth also remains a major dockyard and base for the Royal Navy.

In recent years work was started on a 170 metre high Spinnaker Tower sited at Portsmouth Harbour to celebrate the city's maritime tradition. The tower was completed in 2005.
