Lake Windermere is a large, natural lake in the the Lake District National Park. It is over 18km in length and nearly 1.5 kilometres wide, an area of over 14 sq kilometres making it the largest natural lake in England. It is fed by numerous rivers.
Lake Windermere is one of the most popular tourist destinations in England. It attracts million of visitors every year, many of whom come to enjoy its beauty and wildlife from the edge, or even venture into the lake for a spot of open water swimming.
Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England at 978 metres above sea level. It is located in the Lake District National Park, in Cumbria and is part of the Southern Fells.
The word 'Scafell' comes from Old Norse and means 'the place where one hides'. This name was given because of its remote location, which made it a good place to hide from enemies or to avoid taxes during times of war or strife!
Scafell Pike is the second peak of the Three Peaks Challenge.
The highest peaks in the Scafell range are Scafell Pike, Scafell, Ill Crag and Broad Crag.
Castlerigg Stone Circle is a stone circle in the English county of Cumbria.
Castlerigg Stone Circle is one of the most important megalithic monuments in Britain. It has been described as "the finest example of a stone circle in Cumbria and one of the most impressive in Britain."
The stone circle is located on a hilltop overlooking the village of Castlerigg, near Keswick, with panoramic views and the mountains of Helvellyn and High Seat as a backdrop, and has been dated to about 3000 BC.
English Heritage are custodians of Castlerigg Stone Circle. On select dates throughout the summer, and weather dependant, volunteers will be on site to give short talks to visitors and answer queries and questions visitors may have about the site.
Limited parking is available at the site. Walking from the centre of Keswick to the stones takes approximately 30 minutes.
Dogs on leads are welcome. Please be aware that the site is grazed by sheep.
Lakeland Motor Museum in Backbarrow is housed in a converted mill in the heart of the Lake District, minutes from Lake Windermere.
You can explore a fascinating collection of over 30,000 exhibits that trace the development of road transport throughout the twentieth century - cycles, motorbikes, motor cars and automobilia. Highlights include an Isle of Man TT tribute and the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition.Much more than simply a museum of motoring, local history and period shopping displays, authentic recreations and a picturesque riverside cafe makes it a great day out in Cumbria for the whole family.
Derwent Pencil Museum opened in 1981 and quickly became a key tourist attraction for those visiting the Lake District. The Museum is home to one of the biggest colouring pencils in the world, a 7.91 metre yellow pencil completed on 28 May 2001 and weighing in at 446.36 kilograms or 984.1 pounds!!
There's a long history of pencil making in the area, the first pencil factory in Keswick opened in 1832.
It is believed that the Museum now receives over 80,000 visitors a year from all around the world. The museum features as one of the locations in the 2012 film Sightseers (winner of Best Screenplay, British Independent Film Awards 2012 - BIFA), and has been seen on TV in programmes such as Made in Britain, an ITV4 series narrated by Ricky Tomlinson and it was mentioned by comedian Phil Jupitus in the "Nonsense" episode of BBC2's QI programme (Episode 11 of the 'N' series).
