Outdoor lovers can plan a full day hike in Northumberland National Park (23 miles) to revel in the tranquillity of rolling hills, low mountains and sweeping valleys.

The property sleeps six so is just right for a family or group of friends. The lounge is open-plan, with cosy sofas for you to sink into while the children play on the Nintendo Wii. On quiet evenings following action-packed days, watch a DVD as a family while your dogs nestle at your feet. Cook up a feast using local ingredients in the well-equipped kitchen, then enjoy family meals in the airy dining area.

Outside, there's a small, enclosed garden with a tidy lawn and a bench for sharing holiday moments (and cake). Explore the village of Beadnell on foot, perhaps popping into an eatery for a morning coffee or half a pint before heading to the beach. Beadnell Bay is a stunning sandy cove where you can enjoy rock pooling, paddling or just stretching out for an afternoon doze.

Seahouses (2 miles) is a popular market town with a pretty harbour. From here, why not take a day trip on a boat to the rocky Farne Islands, famous for their seals and seabirds. For a good dose of history, follow the Northumberland Coastal Path 5 miles north to the magnificent Bamburgh Castle. If you have any Harry Potter fans in your group, Alnwick (14 miles) is must – the medieval castle here was used as a set for the famous films.
